PenPal Schools announced the launch of a series of mobile apps designed to help students connect and interact with peers around the world, allowing them to discover other cultures and discuss global issues. The free apps (available for both Android and Apple Devices) expand access to global education for the growing number of people around the world who use smartphones as their primary way to access the internet.
Together pen pals enroll in interactive courses on topics such as current events, culture, or history — all while practicing their language skills. The context of a high-quality educational platform bolsters the exchange. It allows learners to reflect on and share their experiences with one another. The mobile apps were designed to bridge the digital divide also make it possible for pen pals with unreliable or limited internet connectivity to securely access the courses offline.
Penpal Schools’ learning community has been growing quickly, they've connected over 70 thousand people in 90 countries (and counting!) with their successful web app (launched in January 2015). The company was recognized by President Obama as one of 16 leading social entrepreneurs as part of the White House Spark Initiative, and was also the Grand Prize winner of Dells Innovation Pitch Slam.
