Internet technologies have certainly opened new and more egalitarian points of access to information, yet for young learners these same technologies have made it vastly more difficult to judge the quality of that information. When searching for online content, students must venture into an uneven and often overwhelming informational environment in which conventional genres are largely absent and top-notch resources are easily confused with poor or even deliberately misleading ones.

Being a teenager isn’t easy, and that hormonal trial-by-fire becomes even more difficult when you add the issues presented by mental health issues. When getting out of bed is a struggle, you can only imagine how hard it might be to show up in class every day and complete the required class work. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 have either been diagnosed with a serious mental illness, or will be diagnosed during this period.

As an educator, you spend so much time with these teenagers, your students, that it is essential to know how to be on the lookout for signs of mental illness and mental health problems. What should you be watching out for? How can you help your students if you suspect there might be a mental health problem in play?
