A recent study conducted by TNTP reported that the schools they examined were spending, on average, $18,000 per teacher for training over the course of 19 days. At the end of the training cycle, however, little to no improvement was shown in teacher performance, with 2 out of 10 teachers improving worse over the next two to three years.

During the study, TNTP found that there was no formal process or goal setting in these training sessions, and “districts just throw different teacher-development techniques (and lots of dollars) at the wall and hope something sticks.” In essence, thousands of dollars were wasted on teaching techniques that didn’t contribute or negatively contributed to the performance of their teachers.

Arguably more important than the knowledge a student gains through formal education are the skills he or she develops. Indeed, future employers are likely to evaluate them according to their communicative and collaborative abilities. That’s why it’s so important for teachers to give students plenty of opportunities to work together and to share their findings with one another.

Lucidpress, a free design and publication app that will soon offer integration with Google Classroom, can help with both objectives. With its variety of professional templates and its easy-to-learn interface, it’s a perfect entry-level tool for students and teachers alike. Here are a few ways to make the most of it in the classroom.

New York, NY - August 25, 2015 - Today, CodeNow, a nonprofit focused on teaching underrepresented, diverse high school students how to code, is launching #CodeHow, the first online video tutorial series designed specifically for teens and accessible for free on Youtube.

“Today’s online resources are geared towards adults with more advanced knowledge of coding, whereas we work with kids that are just getting their feet wet,” said Ryan Seashore, founder of CodeNow. “So far we’ve been able to reach over 1,000 students through our direct in-person workshops and our newer CodeNow-in-a-Box model. But most programs only occur in major metro areas, which means lots of kids can’t learn about coding just because of location. The video series is accessible by anyone, anywhere - and it’s free.”

New EdTech Resource | Vastly: Search the Internet by Reading Level

Vastly is a resource in development that is being designed to help students search and find internet content that is appropriate for their needs and ability level.  This project started after research into allowing “at risk” students to self-select reading material. At the end of the project, the self-selectors increased their reading scores by 59%, whereas the control, the textbook readers increased by 10%.

We created Vastly to help teachers reduce the amount of noise students have to sift through when looking for materials on topics that interest them that are also within the range of their reading ability. The Kickstarter campaign is to move our proof-of-concept platform into market ready condition. All of the funds will go to programmers who are building the platform out to include 50,000 rather than a mere 50 websites.  Check out the campaign for more information.
