The educational system in America is faces numerous challenges. Between overworked and underpaid staff and the need to “teach to the tests” to retain federal funds, many students fall behind their peers in a system that might not be aware of the average student’s struggle. The devastating effects of an imperfect educational system are most evident in minority populations.

According to the 2013 National Assessment of Educational Progress, eighth-grade black boys scored only marginally higher on their average reading and math scores when compared to fourth-grade white girls. Latino males had about the same results. Many impoverished minority students make the difficult decision to drop out, resulting in a graduation rate of only 57 percent for black males and 62 percent for Latino males within four years of attending high school. White men fare much better, with a comparable 79 percent graduation rate.

At The Bronx Latin School in New York City, teacher Katrina Roman says the topic of ancient history doesn’t usually set students abuzz. But this week, they took a field trip to ancient Aztec ruins using Google Expeditions, a virtual reality teaching tool built with Google Cardboard. Normally, their assignment would involve poring over photocopied photographs, but instead, they stood at the top of Chichen Itza, then examined detailed carvings at Tenochtitlan.

Amid “oohs” and “aahhs,” the students shouted out details they noticed and shot hands up to answer Ms. Roman’s questions.

Incorporating new technology in the classroom can be a source of excitement and dread, depending on a whole range of factors. Technology has the power to help support (not replace) traditional teaching methods — but too often, the approach to a plugged-in classroom is a misguided attempt to reinvent the wheel. Adding technology to your classroom won't necessarily change student learning fundamentals unless you and your teaching team are informed and empowered to use technology for what it is: A powerful tool that can amplify your teaching practice when incorporated as part of a larger instructional model.
