Reading Horizons Launches Online Dyslexia Screener at No Cost

Inspired by research on the effectiveness of early remediation, a group of reading specialists developed the screener to help educators identify and support students with dyslexia

(Salt Lake City, UT) October 18, 2018 — In honor of dyslexia awareness month, Reading Horizons, a leading provider of literacy solutions for the Prek-12 education market, has launched a complimentary online dyslexia screener. Parents and educators can access the non-diagnostic risk screener to identify indicators of dyslexia, with the goal being earlier recognition and intervention.

Studies show that approximately 10-20% of students struggle with factors related to dyslexia. The announcement came during the company’s second-annual Online Dyslexia Summit on Thursday, October 18.

​(Waltham, MA) October 24, 2018 -- Dr. Marina Bers has been named the new department chair of the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development at Tufts University. This appointment puts Dr. Bers at the forefront of one of the country’s leading departments serving children, youth, and families.

With her new appointment, Dr. Bers will continue to explore and research how young students learn to be creators and collaborators with technology and with each other. In addition to being named department chair, Dr. Bers is also the director of the DevTech Research Group at Tufts University, where she leads the team researching the impact of computational thinking and coding education in early childhood. With her team, she conducts original and peer-reviewed research into the value of these skills for children in society.

A lack of access to computer science (CS) education is causing our students – and the future American workforce – to fall further and further behind. According to recent National Center for Education Statistics, there are 570,926 open computing jobs nationwide and only 49,291 computer science graduates. In years to come, even more jobs, including those that might not obviously require CS skills, will need tech-savvy workers.

Luis von Ahn is an inventor, entrepreneur and computer scientist. He recently won the 2018 Lemelson-MIT prize, which awards a mid-career inventor whose patented product or process has significantly improved society.  He is known for co-inventing CAPTCHAs and Duolingo, a language-learning platform created to bring free language education to the world.

​With over 300 million users, it is now the most popular language-learning platform category worldwide on both iTunes and Google Play.

The Wonder League Robotics Competition provides children a global stage to learn and demonstrate 21st century skills, without worrying about a fee or travel – making it accessible to children in every part of the world.

​Last year, the Wonder League Robotics Competition drew more than 22,000 participants – with 47 percent of the participants being girls – making this a unique robotics platform that draws nearly as many boys as girls.

CSforALL Movement Expands, Creates Opportunities for 47 Million K-12 Students

On Tuesday, October 9, 2018, more than 13,800 viewers tuned in live via Microsoft Mixer to the second annual Computer Science for All (CSforALL) Summit, held this year at Wayne State University in Detroit. In addition to sponsoring the livestream, Microsoft announced commitments to expand support of computer science education programs in partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Girls Who Code, and Black Girls Code.

​These programs will provide training and support to teach computer science to more than 5,300 teachers and trainers and 165,000 young people. Microsoft, along with 293 other organizations, are creating a true movement in computer science education in the U.S.

Salt Lake City, UT October 11, 2018 --  Waterford Institute, the nonprofit provider of the Waterford UPSTART online kindergarten readiness program, today announced that it has been awarded an Education Innovation and Research (EIR) Expansion Grant from the United States Department of Education’sOffice of Innovation and Improvement.

The EIR program supports entities that design, generate, and validate solutions to persistent educational challenges and supports the expansion of effective solutions to serve substantially larger numbers of students. Expansion grants are the largest awarded by the program and require the highest standard of outcome results to qualify.
