Codespiration is a new initiative to get elementary school kids exposed to the basics of computer coding. But instead of the usual online ‘move the sprite’ game, it wants kids to minimise on-screen time and learn via more traditional methods. The codespiration set is an illustrated storybook, a workbook, and a parent’s coding guide. The illustrated book tells the story of Jonny, Jackie and Joy and how they sort out the mess at the zoo.
Along the way, and without even realising it, kids are introduced to common coding principles and vocabulary. These are carried over into the workbook, which is full of exercises, activities, crafts and board games that all reinforce coding concepts and commands in a way that young kids can easily understand.
Can you put your socks on over your shoes and still walk properly?

And if parents want their kids to do some real coding, that’s covered too. codespiration includes a step-by-step parent’s guide that will enable children to write their own small, easy-to-code programs that put into practice what they’ve learned in the books.
