Why we need positive disruption in the education sector!

Sydney, NSW: As Universities release their spots for school leavers, Coder Academy is starting a new, 12-month Coding Bootcamp for HSC graduates starting in March 2018. The GenTech Bootcamp is NOT an alternative to University or TAFE. It is a unique and innovative way to acquire 21s t Century skills that are NOT being taught in most high schools.

It will give students the foundational coding skills to help them complete other degrees or secure in demand jobs around the world. It is an amazing fast track to vital digital skills for all young people, but specially girls.

DOES CODING MATTER?

"There is a consensus amongst some of the smartest and most powerful people in the world, that coding is an incredibly important skill:

”Whether you want to uncover the secrets of the universe, or you just want to pursue a career in the 21st century, basic computer programming is an essential skill to learn”
Stephen Hawking

“Learning to code is useful no matter what your career ambitions are”
Ariana Huffington

“An understanding of computer science is becoming increasingly essential in today’s world. Our national competitiveness depends upon our ability to educate our children—and that includes our girls—in this critical field”
Sheryl Sandberg

"Whether we're fighting climate change or going to space, everything is moved forward by computers, and we don't have enough people who can code"
Richard Branson

Coding is NOT just about STEM. Coding skills are going to be needed in almost all careers. Examples include:

  • art
  • design
  • academic research
  • education
  • marketing
  • manufacturing
  • finance
  • security
  • fitness/sport
  • data analytics
  • armed forces
  • police force and many more

As more devices are connected to the internet, as more data gets generated, as AI gets more sophisticated, people with a solid grasp of how computers work and how to talk to them, will be some of the most powerful. If we accept this as true, then it is critical that this group is as diverse as possible.

WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN?

It is also clear from a variety of reports & research* that Australia is struggling to get enough students into STEM degrees, completing STEM degrees and pursuing STEM careers, particularly girls. The research suggests that methods to address this problem include:

  • Fast paced learning environment with mentors
  • Focus on the skills required in Industry
  • Stackable qualifications that can be added to over time
  • A focus on teaching skills rather than fact acquisition
  • Ensure these skills include problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, design
    thinking and collaboration
  • Solving real world problems to drive engagement
  • Working in collaborative groups
  • Teaching coding in conjunction with entrepreneurship
  • Effective assessment and regular feedback
  • An environment that builds confidence and breaks down fear

WHAT IS THE CODER ACADEMY SOLUTION?

Coder Academy is committed to delivering a new style of educational program that provides the benefits of an accredited higher education course but is done in an industry relevant, agile, future focused way. While it doesn’t replace University of TAFE it provides vital educational experiences that neither of these fine institutions have the same capacity to provide.

Coder Academy is part of established listed company Redhill. Coder Academy have been successfully running Australia’s largest and only accredited coding bootcamp for career changers (ages 25+) for the last 2 years. GenTech is going to start as a small class of 25 students 20 hours per week.

Students will complete work experience in technology companies and have face to face time with a variety of industry mentors. There will be a focus on well being as well as 21
s t Century skills with yoga classes, meditation and other fitness sessions provided. Students will get to be part of emerging technology meetups hosted at Coder Academy and get exposure to a HUGE range of possible careers.

Coder Academy is piloting this program in Sydney, starting March 2018. Join the GenTech revolution and be a part of some much needed, positive disruption to a flagging education sector.
