Starting in October, KidWind will host training sessions nationwide to help teachers spark excitement about STEM and renewable energy learning in students
(Saint Paul, MN) September 9, 2014 – KidWind, the nation’s leader in clean energy education, is launching a new nationwide professional development program for educators called REcharge Labs. The training sessions will provide educators of grades K-12 with standards-aligned knowledge and tools to help their students build connections between STEAM – science, technology, engineering, art and math—and the social and environmental benefits and issues relating to wind and solar energy.
“We’ve been training teachers in renewable energy for over a decade, but when we launched our Future of Renewables Initiative this past February, one of our goals was to expand and improve upon these trainings to give educators access to top-quality tools for their classrooms, empowering them to build students’ excitement for learning through science,” said Michael Arquin, founder of KidWind. “When we saw that the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council was offering grants through its STEM Scale-UP Program, we knew this opportunity to design a new training package would be a great jumping off point for a nationwide roll-out.”
KidWind currently offers eight different REcharge Lab training sessions, assembled by grade level as well as by solar or wind energy topics. The course content for younger students focuses on introductory wind and solar power concepts, while older grades become more involved with data collection, scientific process, and more complex concepts like energy storage.
For the $395 registration fee, participating educators will receive four hours of comprehensive training, corresponding continuing education hours, an educator pack of the Lab materials (a one-person version of the classroom kits for purchase), and a one-time use voucher for $100 in KidWind store credit.
KidWind will host a total of 40 REcharge Labs in the following cities: Fargo, ND; Bozeman, MT; Austin, TX; Houston, TX; San Francisco, CA; San Diego, CA; Princeton, NJ; New York, NY; Washington, DC; Virginia Beach, VA; Boston, MA; Ashville, NC; Chicago, IL; Denver, CO and Salt Lake City, UT.
