Every February we celebrate Black History Month. The objective is to acknowledge, celebrate and appreciate the contributions that black Americans have made to our society, culture and history. Ranging from those who fought against slavery like Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman, to civil rights leaders such as Rev Martin Luther King, Jr and his wife Coretta Scott King, and Malcolm X.  This hook gives a brief insight into the accomplishments of these remarkable men and women.

Some, like Thurgood Marshall, W.E.B DuBois and Rosa Parks are familiar names, and others, such as Mary McCloud Bethune are less well known, but just as inspirational.

Teachers can use this hook as a jumping off point for any or all of these historical figures. The brief synopsis of their contributions to the causes of civil rights, abolition and education deserve to be explored and discussed on a deeper level. This hook is just a tantalizing taste, a glimpse into some of the nation’s most influential black Americans. Have your students learn a little bit about them, and ignite their desire to learn more. This hook is a perfect introduction to the American Civil Rights movement, the abolition of slavery, Affirmative Action and other social studies and history tie-ins. But most of all, it is a perfect springboard to begin the celebration of Black History Month.

You can find the free hook for your classroom here.
