We wanted to make it easy for educators, even volunteers and parents without an arts background, to give children an excellent arts education.” Doodles Academy is launching with four inspiring units, each designed to be implemented over multiple lessons. New projects will be added regularly. Each lesson within a project builds on the one before it, allowing children to create sophisticated artworks that are nonetheless manageable for both child and educator.
In partnership with the Portland Child Art Studio in Portland, Oregon all projects have been thoroughly workshopped and tested. Education in visual arts fosters growth mindset and problem solving ability, and positively impacts student performance in other subjects. Despite these benefits, visual arts programming is often one the first electives to be de-funded or cut.
These cuts further disparities in arts education access. According to one study, in 2008 59% of whites reported having access to the arts in school while only 28% of African-Americans and 26% of Hispanics had access.
Committed to increasing access to arts education, Doodles Academy has embarked on a crowd-funding campaign to keep its high-quality content free and available to all. Doodles Academy is run entirely by board members and dedicated volunteers. Donations will cover operating costs and the development and release of additional projects.
