Activities related to computational thinking, coding, and other problem-solving skills are becoming more and more expected in today’s classroom environments. Indiana, for example, has just launched a new set of standards that includes computer science skills along with traditional science skills for grades K-8. While there are many ways to address this skills and standards in K-12 classrooms, one of my new favorites is Puzzlets, an experience that combines hands-on manipulatives with digital apps to create an engaging, thoughtful, and all around rich learning activity. FreeSpeech is an iOS and Mac app that is designed to help students compose grammatically correct sentences by moving words like building blocks. This app has got a ton of potential for helping students not only develop a better understanding of grammar, but also for those who face challenges with communication, such as ESL students or students with special needs.
