MobyMax - Online Math and Language Curriculum

MobyMax is an outstanding online resources that offers a free math, language, and reading curriculum for K-8 teachers.  All lessons are aligned with the Common Core Standards and teachers can implement the service with very little work on their end.  They also have a Pro version available for a very reasonable $59.  So, let's dig a little deeper and see what this program is all about!

When you first create a MobyMax account you'll be presented with your home screen dashboard and be asked to start enrolling your students.  At this point, it'd be helpful to have a list of the students you would like to enroll (they let you sign up an unlimited amount of kids) and an idea of what you want their usernames and passwords to be.

The Teacher Dashboard

Enrollment is fairly self-explanatory, but throughout the process MobyMax offers assistance through yellow pop-up speech bubbles.  This is a great addition for any teachers who are uncomfortable or unfamiliar with technology.  They also provide an easy to follow guide on the steps your students should take to connect to your class.
Picture
Enrolling your Students

Once you have your students enrolled and connected, they will log in and begin!  When students sign in they'll see a dashboard similar to the teacher dashboard and they'll need to choose Math, Language, Vocabulary or Reading.  The first activity in both sections in a placement test to determine their level of proficiency.  As I mentioned before both sections are completely aligned with the Common Core Standards.

A Sample Placement Test Question

After your students have finished their placement tests, their results will be automatically linked to your teacher account.  You'll be able to see everyone's results and check out which indicators and standards students are having trouble with.

Then, MobyMax does all of the legwork by assigning lessons to help students fill in their missing knowledge gaps.  The software determines which indicators students need work on and creates assignments based on that!  It's an incredibly useful feature and a huge time saver.

When students sign in, they'll see exactly what they need to work on and the teacher can keep track of their progress.  However, teachers have complete control over the process and if they want to delete or assign different lessons, that option is available.

The program works the same for Math, Language, Vocabulary, and Reading: assigning students new lessons, keeping track of results, and updating the teacher on each student's progress.  The Language section is a new addition and is a great resource for helping students with grammar, sentence structure, and parts of speech.  And essentially, that's the core of the program.

But, if you're willing to put in the extra $59 (or $300 for a school-wide license) the Pro Version has a ton of extra features that a lot of teachers would enjoy.

With the Pro Version, teachers can print out student progress reports, have support for IEP plans, offer a nice collection of math and vocabulary games to the students, have contests, award badges, and a whole lot more.

If you're interested in the site, this video offers a great overview of how everything works:

Getting Started in MobyMax from MobyMax on Vimeo.

In conclusion, MobyMax is an excellent service that gives teachers as little or as much control over the curriculum as they want.  It's aligned to the common core standards, designed to be completely automatic, and offers an enormous amount of feedback and student data.  On top of all that, the Free version includes everything a teacher needs to run the program successfully in the classroom.  Well done MobyMax, well done.

Hi Gayle!

You'll want to sign up as a teacher, and then register as a homeschool. The code is mc147. Here's some more information if you'd like it. Let me know if you have any trouble!

Hi Erwin,

Sorry to hear you're still having trouble. I would suggest contacting your teacher, or other students in your class to see if they have been able to get in. Or you can email Moby Max support at:

http://www.mobymax.com/Help/

I wish there was more I could do to help, but I just review the resources, I don't actually work for Moby Max, so all I can do is try to put you in touch with someone who can hopefully help. Good luck Erwin!

I registered my AIS classes, but I don't know how often the computer lab at my school will be able to accommodate my two classes every day. Is it possible for my students to access the site from their cellphones? I would love to have a tablet for each student, but the money is not available for such a purchase. Thanks!

Hi Nadine -

I spoke with MobyMax today and they said your students can use smartphones to access the site, it will just be small. But, if they have Android devices, they can download the app!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobymax.mmdroid&hl=en

Hope that helps!

Both my 5th and 6th grader are using MobyMax thru school this yr. I personally do not like the program and feel that IXL is a much better choice. I feel the program is not user friendly and that the teaching videos are slow and incomplete.

Hi Pat,

Looks like the points from FactMaster don't count towards badges:

http://www.mobymax.com/Help/index.php/article/how-are-points-calculated-in-the-contests

I've sent the team an email to see if it's changing, so if they say it is, I'll let you know, but for now it doesn't look like it. Thanks again for reading!

Why not create a Parent Portal sign in this way it will be linked to the student sign on as well and parents can then reinforce at home with the student etc.
