Author: Bob Hand  Financial literacy is an essential life skill that is, unfortunately, lacking in U.S. K-12 schools. This is becoming a clearer reality with each passing year, and several states are taking action. In late 2017, Arkansas lawmakers approved a new law, named the Personal Finance and Job Readiness Act, which added mandatory financial literacy standards to high school graduation requirements.
School districts can choose to offer a course designed to teach personal finance skills, or those skills can be incorporated into existing courses. This will go into effect in 2021.  Legends of Learning is an online resource designed to support 3rd - 8th grade students in their science classes. With over 1000 NGSS-aligned games and simulations, Legends of Learning offers an enormous range of engaging, informative activities that students can play through, provided they have an internet-enabled device.
The games are all designed to be short (5-20 minutes), so they can be easily and quickly integrated. Myriad Sensors offers a collection of 3 PocketLab sensors, all of which are designed for 4th - 12th grade science classrooms. The PocketLab One is designed to be a basic starter solution (and would fit the needs of most science classes). It can measure motion, acceleration, angular velocity, magnetic field, pressure, altitude, and temperature.
The PocketLab Weather sensor is designed for weather measurements and can collect data on temperature, humidity, light, barometric pressure, altitude, heat index, and dew point. Finally, the PocketLab Voyager (which I reviewed) does it all, and collect data on motion, light, magnetic fields, weather, and you can attach an external temperature probe. Learning Transported by Jamie Donally is a new ISTE publication that explores how augmented, virtual, and mixed reality tools can be used across K-12 grade levels and subject areas. Donally is a former preK-8 math teacher who is also the founder of ARVRinEDU. Her new book offers definitions and examples of augmented, virtual, and mixed reality as well as comparisons of devices and platforms, with tips for selecting the best ones.
Donally also provides a collection of practical lesson plans, mapped to standards and content areas. Overall, Learning Transported is an excellent read that offers practical suggestions for how these emerging technologies can be used in support of teaching and learning. Continue reading. |
