The concept of the tech challenge is a relatively new idea, created by former special education teacher and IT integrator Andrea Keller. This idea is designed to bring technology into the classroom, but in a way that integrates it effectively for both teachers and students. Technology in the classroom has numerous benefits. We live in a world dominated by technology and the necessity for tech integration in the classroom has never been greater.

Students who are not aware of these technologies will certainly have a disadvantage in the job market when they grow up. It is vital to introduce technology now. It needs to become a way of life in the classroom.

In addition, the current statistics do not instill confidence. Despite 94% of teachers using computers for school email, only 67% used computers for instructional purposes.  So, how can we get more technology into classrooms?  This is where "Tech Challenges" come into play.

In addition to running my own startup, I am the Technology Director for a private K-12 school in Brazil. While providing tech support at school, I have close contact with hundreds of teachers. Apart from typical tech questions, teachers also frequently ask how to properly integrate technology within the classroom.

This is a challenging question to answer here in Brazil, as, unlike many places in the United States, it is unimaginable for schools to provide high-quality devices to every student. Brazil has some of the highest import taxes in the world, and electronics take the brunt of these tax rates. For example, the iPhone 5s (16g version) sells for the equivalent of $1,193 in Brazil, whereas in United States it costs only $649 – almost half the price.

Many teachers here are well-informed of recent technology trends and feel they lag behind peers in the United States and Europe due to lack of access. My advice to them is that there are ways you canintegrate technology without pricey devices.

While they might not be able to use an interactive whiteboard to “flip” lessons, they can still use technology to make their classes more efficient. One of the best ways to do this, in my opinion, is creating a classroom blog. A blog can benefit the educational process on many levels, as shown below:

The effects of the increasing usage of technology in the field of academics have been remarkably positive. From computers and smartphones, to 3D printers and ebook readers - advanced gadgets of various types have found acceptance in classrooms, and have become an integral part of students’ educational pursuits at home as well. One of the latest debates in the domain of education technology is about whether teachers and students should become ‘friends’ on the various social media sites. There are naysayers, who insist that such connections would encroach into the private lives of both students and their instructors. While it’s definitely true that a certain distance needs to be maintained between the two groups, we can prove that staying in touch with students on a portal like Facebook is a great idea for present-day teachers:
